Polish Is Costing You Trust

Why rough posts outperform

Welcome back to Viral Examples.

Today (in 2 mins or less) we're diving into why the posts that look like they took 30 seconds often beat the ones that took three days.

The Ugly Post Advantage: Rough Beats Polished

Two founders share the same win. One posts a designed carousel with brand colors and a headline in Helvetica. The other posts a blurry phone photo of a whiteboard with a two-line caption.

The whiteboard gets four times the comments.

Polish signals marketing. Rough signals a real person mid-thought. Feeds are drowning in the first and starving for the second.

Readers have learned that designed content wants something from them. A rough post reads like a message from a peer.

1/ Show the artifact, skip the graphic

A screenshot of the spreadsheet. The Slack message. The sticky note on the monitor.

Real objects carry proof that a template never will.

2/ Write like a text message

Lowercase openings, short lines, one thought that trails into the next.

Save the tight structure for long-form. Feed posts win on voice.

3/ Leave one imperfection in

A typo fixed in the comments. A photo slightly off center.

Readers trust what looks unedited because it feels unfiltered.

4/ Keep the idea sharp

Ugly format, sharp thinking. The roughness earns attention. The idea has to earn the follow.

Never let the casual look excuse a lazy point.

Your audience can smell a campaign. Give them a person instead.
